Individuality has become a cliche

Every time you turn on the Disney Channel you always see a movie about "Believing in yourself" and "Doing what you think is right" and "Doing things to your own beat" and "Being yourself". I don't think that individuality is a bad thing, but thanks to programs like the disney channel that promote being an individual to the masses, it really is becoming a cliche. I can't stand five million girls who all have the same ten thousand dollar phones with unlimited texting and who constantly listen to Hannah montana, telling me that they are an individual when they do exactly like everyone does (which is what the disney channel tells them to do which makes them not only a cliche but mindless zombies!)

Just because a bunch of kids watching a Disney show get a misguided idea of what "individuality" is does not mean that being your unique self is cliche. The idea of being different and true to yourself has been around forever; Hannah Montana didn't start that sh*t.

6 months remaining for the next argument...

Drat JWise, you beat me to it :p. You ever notice how most people try to be different the same way? We must remember that being different and being yourself are not necessarily the same thing. A lot of people put so much emphasis on the being different portion of this that the current idea of "individuality" has been skewed from just being yourself to remaking your image into something off-the-wall and, usually, shocking. It's funny how on one hand we are told to be your unique self, then we are told that everyone needs to belong - which is supposed to be the root cause of gangs and cults. I guess the goal is to join a unique cult - Yo Gabba Gabba.

I went to UC Berkeley for undergrad. Let me tell you, I have never before and never since seen such a large portion of a community try to be "different" in the same exact way.
