America is both influential and wealthy and has a bigger chance of setting the green age of than most other countries, with combined pressure from the EU and the USA maybe gree issues can be forced upon the big polluters like China and save our planet.
If the huge economies of this world start to invest in meassures against global warming the price of methods will go down through mass production!
Its the planet we are fighting for, make sure its there for future generations, go green America show the world how its done!
theyoungdem said 06/17, 08:16 PM
I am with you in making the world green. However, I hate to break this to you, despite what you believe, America is not looked up upon. It is not very influential anymore, and it is not respected by most foreign nations.
Our policies right now would not change many of other countries' decisions, what would change other countries is not us. It's their own leaders. Their own leaders would have to step up, and realize the threats climate change imposes, and change it themselves. Not only can they rely on America, but they don't look for us for policy help.
Do you honestly believe that all other countries look at us with awe and honor our greatness? Alot of them despises Americans, (trust me I know, I lived in three other countries). I lived at one of the other wealthiest nations in the world, United Kingdom. They don't like America, look what happened to Tony Blair, aka huge Bush supporter.
You're intentions are good, but incorrect the way you plan out they should happen. Only they themselves are capable of helping green policies come into effect, not us.
Stee_theliberal said 06/18, 06:01 AM
I am British myself and do not like Americans because they are so inward looking. But that does not vhange my idea that America is the second largest polluter in the world and needs to start making change, even if the combination of the EU and USA cannot stop the other world polluters like China and India. Then at least another big polluter of the USA has stopped making global warming an issue.
theyoungdem said 06/18, 10:57 AM
If you are British, I suggest you focus on your own green policies, and not try to change America's, as I said every country would have to change their policies, they would not change simply if the U.S. changed their policies.
Also I resent that statement of you generalizing the entire American population and call them "inward looking". If you want Americans to change then leave it to the Americans, if you want the world to change as you said in the first argument, then leave it to the rest of the world.
Don't rely on America being the most influential country in the world thus causing other countries to go green. It won't work.
Stee_theliberal said 06/19, 01:02 PM
As for the inwards looking thing, only one in four people own a passport so that shows that a large portion of america have not experienced the rest of the world and have to rely on the media. Though I must stress as it was unclear before that I am not xoenaphobic but disagree with the corruption and misuse of power in the America Elite, as the worlds greatest economy after the EU; and the EU has already issued huge amounts of strict green policies and is really starting to make improvements, surely America can make a similar move for the sake of humanity and the planet as a whole!
theyoungdem said 06/19, 06:43 PM
It's true, but that is actually alot compared to the "rest of the world". Now you say there is corrption and misuse of power in "the America Elite"? We did not achieve the world's strongest economy with misuse and corruption. Corrupt countries are the ones such as Bangladesh, that exist as third world countries. You now insult our own government.
Our government revolutionized representation of the people. The EU, is not a country, it is a union. You first started off this argument by saying America should change its policies so the rest of the world would.
Now you insult Americans and America itself, and say we should follow the EU. We are not inward looking, we possibly know more about the world than any other country.
Please refrain from insulting Americans on this site, as you can see it is a site called "elephant-donkey.com", after the two major parties in this great country. It's just a suggestion, you are free to do whatever you wish.
Global Warming is an issue there are arguments that mankind isn't the primary cause of it but the vast majority of scientists believe that man kind is contributing to it. If you also do not believe that, then you can surely agree that changing to environmentally friendly methods has many other advantages such as cleaning up the air and water - improving health and the envirnment. Also advantages such as no reliance if fossil fuels will have economic and later social advantages. Plus morally if we no longer need oil and such resources the developing world will no longer have to fight the western world for a fair share!

Report Offensive CommentCombating global warming is going to be a lot harder when America (a world superpower) is refusing to sign agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol. How can we say to countries like China and India that they have to look after the world when we are dumping chemicals in indian soil and America is simply ignoring climate change. I do however think that we need to concentrate on issues like Human Rights rather than climate change (although neither should be neglected).
Miral150 | 06/18/08
Report Offensive CommentOh yes, i do agree Stee, that we should get off oil, because there are plenty of other political and national security reasons to get off it. And Miral, Kyoto is a fraud! We shouldn't be hurting the environment but just because it's gotten a little warmer we shouldn't make these sorts of documents that will cost billions of dollars to solve something that hasn't even been fully proven yet. And again the VAST MAJORITY is exagerating, there are plenty of scientists who disagree, but they are shut up because the media doesn't do interviews with them, and they are shunned from the scientific community. On another note, there have been studies that have shown that the average global temp. has decreased since 1998 even though CO2 production has risen. And after the second world war when the industries were booming and CO2 was being pumped out in huge amounts, people were getting scared of a global COOLING crisis, so even recent history shows variations. The fact is many people question man-made global warming and so before signing these multi-billion dollar contracts (Kyoto) why can't we just get some solide evidence. But again, getting off oil I think IS the right way to go for the future.

Report Offensive CommentOverinflated gas prices won't stop the gluttonous use of petrol. England and the other European countries are prime examples of that. They pay outrageous prices that would make most Americans grimace in disgust and yet their highways and streets remain clogged with a constant flow of automobiles. As my mom would say, "Clean up your own back yard before you go complainin' to the neighbors about thiers." You people started the whole "carbon footprint" slogan and yet you still can't figure out how to shrink it.

Report Offensive CommentCnd... Are you a scientist? Did you study this matter first-hand? If you do, I can't argue with you. If you aren't, you can't be sure that either the majority of the minority of the scientists are right. And even... What's wrong with being cautious? They are proportionnaly more lung illnesses in Mexico city than in Reykjav??k. It is warmer than some years ago. And maybe it's not because of the pollution... Maybe. But what if it was? Would you let thousands or more people dying for the sole purpose to proove that you are right? As for the debate... I think that if the american government (not the people, just the government) had a less obsolete way of reacting to world-wide problems, it would be far more influent that it is now. Nonetheless, the USA are still influent because they have the power to put their words into acts. Last years, americans were seen like fools because of the way the american government reacted. And after the 9/11, the world looked at them with more indulgence but they (the government) made some huge mistakes and refused to recognize it or even to act in a different way. It's kind of sad. But people are versatile and the new president will have lot of expectation on him. I hope he'll not make the same mistakes Bush made.

Report Offensive CommentDid i call myself a scientist Nockens? How can i say how many scientists agree? i can't but i also know, which is what i said, how can Stee know?, or how can youngdem know that the majority of scientists agree? The reason people say these things about the majority of scientists is because that is all the media reports even though there may be, believe it or not, some scientists out there, out of the millions that exist, that disagree. I am not saying i know all those statistics, but i have been reading and hearing lately that temperatures have DECREASED lately. But why should we spend billions on something we don't know is true!? Being cautious is not the proper way to deal with this, education is, studying is, statistics are. There is no doubt the U.S. still has influence and should exert that influence for switching from oil to renewable sources, there is nothing wrong with that, but these commitments in Kyoto for example are not just to switch from oil, but to spend billions and billions of dollars (which could be used elsewhere) on buying renewable sources and harvesting them, not these stupid carbon credits, or carbon taxes or carbon footprint readers.

It may shock you, but not all scientists agree with man-made global warming! And i have lost all hope in the peace prize since the former VP won it. He is doing NOTHING for world peace, there are so many more people who deserve that prize. And i've seen his slide show, it doesn't even deserve one star. The fact is many people who agree are either listening to the media who doesn't present all the facts, or want anyone that disagree with them to, in the words of Bill O'Reilly, Shut Up! There are still alot of people and politicians who disagree, but they know that if they speak up they will be murdered by the enviro-freaks. By the way you should check out a British documentary called THE GREAT GLOBAL WARMING SWINDLE.
