Fox news broadcasts inaccurate information at times and takes people's comments out of context. They also give awful commentary, and say the most inappropiate things. Why are they even still on the air??
HokiePaul said 07/09, 04:41 PM
"Why are they even still on the air?" The answer is ratings. Fox news is consistently the highest rated cable news station, regardless of the current political environment. They were the top rated group when Bush was at the height of his approval ratings early in his term, as well as recently when he has suffered all time low approval ratings. This shows that their coverage is both fair and accurate, as well as entertaining.
If Fox news wasn't fair, didn't provid accurate information, or was biased once way or another, we would see Fox New's popularity rise and fall in popularity depending on the popularity of their positions.
As far as saying "the most inappropriate things", you would have to be more specific. But one thing that Fox News does better that any other station (which I believe leads to their popularity) is allowing counter arguements to be heard. If someone is one the air making an inappropriate statement, there will probably be someone there to refute it.
At least no single station that is equivalent to Fox News.

Report Offensive CommentTrue - The left doesn't have just one station to turn to for reporting that has a liberal spin on the news... they've got CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and nearly every other broadcast outlet that even barely mentions current events...
GenialFascist | 07/11/08
Report Offensive Commentwhat news organization doesn't do what Fox News does? name one? the fact is that every single news organization has some kind of bias and always takes sound bites to make others look bad. Not just Fox News. personally i hate fox news but i think we should be fair.
Mark | 07/13/08
Report Offensive CommentIn this argument I must agree with Skipper04 in that popularity does not automatically prove objectivity. Fox news is biased! But so is every other news station or media station out there. The only difference is fox news is biased more towards a conservative viewpoint. Media will always be biased and as such will always try and voice and give evidence to make their viewers believe one way rather than another. Happens every single day. Does that make it right? Probably not. But there is nothing anyone can do about it without totally changing our right to freedom of press. As of right now my vote is leaning towards Hokiepaul because lovejone's argument is entirely opinion. Unless evidence is produced that can prove to me that Fox news is indeed the worst news, then my vote goes to Hokiepaul!
shrek | 07/16/08
Report Offensive Commenti don't doubt what you say shrek but you seem to be implying that even though every news organization is biased only Fox News is the worse because it's biased and leans right. what about all the other media that leans left? they are still biased. that fact is all News org. are biased and it would be unfair to pinpoint Fox News as the WORST! don't get me wrong i HATE fox news but lovejones has never provided a significant argument against it. He accuses it of the same thing all news organizations are accused of. there is no significance. plus Hokiepaul hasn't said anything at all that is worth proving that Fox news is not the WORST. all he has to do is prove that there are other news organizations that do the same as Fox and then Fox is automatically NOT THE WORST. both debators are debating in different way that i wouldn't prefer.
Mark | 07/18/08
Report Offensive CommentIf Fox news is so fair and balanced, why is it that Fox viewers are more poorly informed than the average viewer for Jay Leno, The Daily Show, or even any other news organization. As for ratings, if ratings = accuracy, then MASH would be the most "accurate" news show. As far as balanced, Fox has broadcast that there was no real torture at places like Abu Graihb, or in Afghanistan.
reader22 | 07/23/08
Report Offensive Commentyou missunderstood what i said. i basically meant that all news organizations are biased. and no one has clearly defined what makes a news org. the "worst". define what makes one the "worst" and then we can determine who is the "worst". but to say that Fox is biased as a reason for it being the worse than any other news organization today is premature without a definition. They need to be working on different points in this debate because all news is biased in one way or another so there is no significance to Fox also being biased.

Report Offensive CommentI had to laugh when I saw Fox News' piece on, "The News Media's Love Affair with Obama". (Note, NOT the bumper staple "mainstream" media, but the "news" media.) Is this finally an admission that they're not a real news network?
IamFry | 07/24/08
Report Offensive CommentTo clarify - - that the "News Media" has a love affair with Obama is THEIR allegation, though their channel implies that they have no such feelings for Obama. Thus, by THEIR definition, they are not a news channel.
IamFry | 07/24/08
Report Offensive CommentI agree with the fact that media usually tends to be somewhat biased. However, news networks??? main responsibility with society is to provide the rest of the population with accurate information on current events. Showing only one side of the story and neglecting the other is NOT accurate. Therefore, those who take their own opinions and points of views and try to force others into believing the same should not be recognized as a reliable news source. Because of this, I take Fox News as lightly as The Daily Show (at least John Stewart admits that was he is doing is not real journalism).

Report Offensive Commentright mark, i believe that point about the worst not being defined was what he was saying at the end of his post

Report Offensive CommentIt still lists 15 days for next arguement. How come lovejones gets so long to reply. I thought it was 3 days usually?
HokiePaul | 07/28/08
Report Offensive CommentWhen "news" anchors on Fox wonder aloud with a straight face about the secret jihadist meanings behind a fist bump, well that kinda makes the so-called Mainstream media appear to be a paradigm of professional disinterest.
The Skeptic | 08/01/08
Report Offensive CommentFox! Fair and balanced! Fox represent both sides of the argument though somewhat leaning toward the Right. Majority of listeners are liberal, thus many hate Fox. However, since Fox tells it like it is, their ratings are far better than other news organization. They are the one people turn to if they want to listen to both sides of the argument and then make their own opinion as to the truth. You can never get the truth from one source. I used to watch MSNBC, but they are becoming so bitter and divisive I don't watch them anymore. For news information, I normally watch Fox and CNN.
Han | 08/01/08
Report Offensive CommentA lot depends on the news anchor/commentator. Chris Wallace is very moderate and fair. Sean Hannity and Alan Colmes are on opposite ends so their coverage is biased in both directions. The Bill O'Reilly show is probably the most biased on Fox, simply because O'Rielly is conservative and has no liberal co-anchor. To his credit, he does a better job at telling both sides than other anchors. While I think all the other news networks have some moderate anchors, lefties like Keith Olbermann are more the norm than the exception on many of the other networks.
BigFatJoe | 08/05/08
Report Offensive CommentI enjoy fox the most. I am generally very moderate and like to hear fox's angle on news because it seems to be more moderate then others. Fox by far provides the best attempts to provide both sides. It is obvious alot of their views are to the right. Big woop everyone else is leaning left. Im just glad FOX doesnt make up news like CNN. Or pay children to throw stones at US troops CNN. So if the worst means leaning a little right I am ok with being the worst because i at least watch whats real

I actually have no great beef with Fox news. but there is a flaw in your argument HokiePaul. Popularity isn't proof of objectivity (thus people like Rush Limbaugh, who regardless what we think of him has to be seen as biased, are still popular). even if it was, the reason Fox News is popular is because they have cornered the market with conservative political viewers. Liberals don't have just one station to turn to and thus are split between the various other networks. So no you wouldn't see Fox News's popularity rise and fall with the popularity of their positions because their positions are always favorable to their conservative audiences. It's just that there is no liberal equivalent to Fox News.
