"[Democrats] knew their efforts were in vain - that their bills either had no chances of passing, or would force President Bush to deliver on his veto threat... But in some respects that's beside the point - because in the middle of an election that looks to make the Dems' hold on power even stronger, much of this Congress' work is really more about laying the foundation for next year." Instead of ripping passages straight out of publications, you could do a little thinking yourself.
The Democrats were given a great opportunity in 2006. They had popular support from Americans on most of the issues, yet they failed to bring forward any significant change to our country.
An excellent example of where the Democrats have failed is the recent passing of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) bill, which grants immunity from lawsuits to telephone companies that participate in the government's wiretapping program. This is a dramatic turn from the Democrat's traditional platform, and one can only surmise that it resulted from a desire to not look "soft on terrorism."
What are the Democrats waiting for? To maintain public support, they must be willing to stand up for what they truly believe in--and not be cowed by Republican sound bites or obstructionism. Otherwise, the Democrats will be laying the foundation for a future that will never come.
I really do think condi should stop using articles to "defend" their position. condi isn't even giving one, just stating that there is an interesting article.

Report Offensive Comment@Mark: Maybe I didn't make it very clear. I felt that condi was trying to justify the Democrats' lack of initiative and progress by using talk about "laying the foundations," and therefore offered my opposing take on the issue. I have to admit though, neither of our points really fit well with the topic given, but I did what I could based on condi's post.

Whenever I see someone refer to the "Democratic Congress", I have to wonder if that individual slept through their 7th grade Social Studies class. Last time I checked you needed a 2/3 majority to override a presidential veto, which Bush consistently threatens with regards to legislation proposed by Democrats. And, the last time I checked, the Democrats had a 51% majority in the Senate--and that's IF you count Joe Lieberman, who's currently campaigning for John McCain. So DO the Democrats have control of Congress??? Only if you can't count. And as for FISA, we all now perfectly well the Republicans would have jumped all over Democrats, calling them traitors if they had opposed the bill. It seems to me a case of knowing when to pick your battles rather than abandoning your principles.
