McCain's Paris Hilton Ad is a Blunder

He doesn't seem to have anything to say very positive about himself," Obama said of McCain. "He seems to only be talking about me. You need to ask John McCain what he's for and not just what he's against." http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1828111,00.html

first, for once i would like to see condi say stuff in your own words and not quotes from articles. Second, i am an obama supporter.

your title states that the ad was a "blunder". Blunder is defined as: "a careless mistake." But lets analyze how much of a mistake it really is.

1. what is the point of the ad?
A: to undermine Obama's message and portray him as a risky person. And question his leadership abilities.
remember, in polls McCain has a large lead over obama about how would be a better commander in chief. So he's using that to his advantage.

2. Is this pretty much "typical republican attacks"?
A: Probably, but historically this has worked. With President Bush in two elections against his democratic rivals.

True it was taken by the Obama campaign and some media as a "bad move" but it's a typical one that has, in the past, helped get ppl elected.

i personally don't like seeing such ads, but it can be effective putting doubt into ppls' minds about his leadership capabilities.

therefore, i don't think it's a "Blunder" or mistake on his part. It's an effective(sneaky) way at attacking a relatively inexperienced person compared to him. It also helps highlights the polls

3 months remaining for the next argument...

After watching Paris Hilton's own "political ad," yes, John McCain's celebrity ad has become a big blunder. No matter how one looks at it, Paris (and Obama, too) had the last laugh.

ppl always concentrate on what the ad looks like and never the true messege of it. to question the leadership skills of young politician with little experience. It's worked in the past, and though i don't think they should have put out the ad, it still can be effective.

The Clinton campaign during the primary has consistently attacked Obama on his perceived inexperience. Now look who's the presumptive Democratic nominee. The tactic didn't work then and still won't work now. McCain should start talking more about himself and what he really stands for rather than engaging in petty name-calling.

I agree Prez, McCain shouldn't do this but historically it's practically part of the republican play book. It has helped get Ronald Reagan get elected and George Bush Jr. twice. and Prez, you still aren't look at the purpose of the ad and what it questions. by making Obama look like a celeb, than he is trying to show that Obama is out of touch(something he has constantly said on the campaign trail) and inexperienced (also emphasized). you say it doesnt work but look at the polls. this is the perfect climate for Obama (a democrat) to win by large margins, but he isnt. Many consider him risky and that's what John McCain is trying to use against Obama and for now, i believe it's working because he isn't being blown away by the democrats. Which given the political climate, is a success for McCain, a republican.

Paris exposed McCain for the petty shallow old man that he has proven himself to be. Worse still, both he and his campaign don't seem to realise the joke is on them- goes to show how out of touch/autistic the Republicans are. To answer your question- this was McCain's blunder- attacking a private individual with the cash to bite back is a dumb move, esp in this age of youtube!

it's only natural that a REPUBLICAN put out a ad following the REPUBLICAN play book. which has been effective in the past. and hits of specific "weaknesses" of obama.

The more McCain talks the more confidence I have in Obama. The more Obama talks the more confidence I have in Obama. I am 70 years old and I believe world leadership belongs to the middle aged young - not to old war mongers. Any thinking person surely must know that America, and American politics, must change in order to survive in a changing world.

Mark, I agree that the Republican tactic (hard-hitting, perception-driven attacks) worked in the past. But the world has changed a lot since 9-11. Republicans must realize this. They cannot and should not engage in these kinds of attacks which worked for them in the past. They cannot afford to go negative in an era of negativity (wars, foreclosures, high oil prices). The last time the world has been in such a bad state was during WWII and the Cold War. Both those times, Americans went for a president who uplifted their spirits and gave them hope--FDR and JFK. I cannot understand why the Republicans continue to cling to their tactic of going negative on their opponent when the primaries have shown that the more a campaign goes negative on Obama, the more people gravitate towards him. Lastly, lest we all forget, the general election is a winner-take-all contest where the real numbers that matter are the electoral votes. Polls may matter in the primaries but it becomes irrelevant in the general election. It's better to look at the current electoral map to see a clearer picture of how the general election is going to shape up. If one is to average the different maps (RCP, ABC, etc.) it paints a worrying chart for John McCain. On average, Obama leads by 100+ electoral votes.

McCain is the typical old republican, and his tatics may work with some of the older voters, but I believe the new voting generation is fed up with a lot of the old puritan ideals of republicans like McCain.

To compare Obama to Paris Hilton is just a joke. However, the ad is just an attempt to undermine Obama and unfortunately, its working

Prez - Obama is the presumptive nominee for a number of reasons, not just because Clinton's attacks on his lack of experience weren't enough. In part, it is the voters distrust of and antipathy toward Clinton that is responsible. Still, one of the issues all voters need to address by November is the question of Obama's experience. Another issue is his choice of friends and associates; and here his judgment has been particularly questionable. Still another is his ability to be on both sides of any given issue - at the same time. All of these are fair game for McCain. McCain is the underdog; he needs his good sense of humor. Obama seems unable to laugh at himself, and this will redound to his detriment; it's another indication of his youth and lack of seasoning. Jack - you might be right. But the main difference between the two generations is that the older folks actually go to the polls.
