McCain's speech wasn't enough to energize his party

As TIME's Joe Klein notes: The vast middle of the speech ??? the part after his bracing introduction ("I don't work for a party ... I work for you") and before he told his prison camp stories ??? was a half-hearted and unadventurous slog through the world of policy, a vivid demonstration of how little McCain cares about this stuff. It was notable only for the steady stream of misrepresentations of Barack Obama's positions

Well, the statement was "McCain's speech wasn't enough to energize his party". I would have to say:

a. Any shot at Obama is going to help energize the party, regardless if they're misrepresentations
b. He seperated himself from the Bush administration, which I highly doubt Republicans are going to lack back on fondly
c. He came through with some strong words to Washington, which Republican's like
d. Was convincingly honest in his comitment to pork spending and fighting special interest groups.

Regardless on whether or not you believe him, it's something Republican's value and will energize more Republican's who were thinking about sitting this one out because of McCain, and also probably some Republicans that were on the fence between Obama and McCain, favoring broad solutions to expansive promises.

So, I feel that McCains speech DID energize his party, a cherry on top of his Sarah Palin sundae.

2 months remaining for the next argument...

This is getting ridiculous. For every single debate so far, condi ricecakes ripped entire passages out of Time and used it as his/her sole argument. There is no effort at all to extrapolate and add personal commentary. Condi, either you shape up and write your own stuff, or everyone can just ignore your face-offs from now on.

Anyone that watched the Dem Convention came away with a sense of hope for the future, while the Rep Convention left me with a sense of naseau. I am a Democrat with a strong Independent streak. I always vote for the best candidate, regardless of their party. In this Presidental election, I just don't see Palin as helping McCain. Folks will quickly tire of her shrill voice and her negative attitude. Like Obama says, she can't just make stuff up. I do like her pro NRA stance ( something that the Dem could learn from ) When she was first announced as the Rep VP, and she was attacked by the press, I thought that was very unfair, but after listening to her the past few days, I have come to the conclusion that she has nothing to say that I want to hear, and I hope Bidden rips her a new one when they debate. McCain should have picked someone else, cause the Rep are going down. Maybe McCain picked her for the scape goat to blame loosing the election on ? Think about it. Sincerely , Hillbilly

McCain's speech wasn't supposed to energize his party; that was Palin's job, and she hit a bullseye. McCain's speech was aimed at independents and undecideds, and while it didn't work for hillbilly, I know several independent who already claim it more effective than Obama's speech. But that's just where I live; then again, I live in Ohio, so that's important.

The problem with the Palin/McCain ticket is that it is part of the old replublican establishment that produced George Bush. It's not enough to say I will buck my party or I'm a maverick on one hand, but your whole campaign and strategy is ran by Karl Rove on the other. Even Palin's speech was written by Bush speechwriters. They won't let her go on network news to give interviews so the American public can get a closer picture of who she is. Instead all the maverick issues she's been running on in this short week such as the plane on Ebay and the bridge to nowhere have all been a lie. They do not offer any solutions in this hard economic times, but instead offer sarcastic rhetoric to attack their opponent even if that's a lie. My fellow Americans let's not fall in the same trap. All party aside, to vote for McCain will be more of the same. At least 90% of it. We cannot afford electing him on 10% change. The Palin/McCain ticket is a ticket not worth the risk.

I wonder who wrote O'bammys speech? Or Joe Bidens? Come on......Bush is not running for office. McCain is his own man, he is NO George Bush, and I don't think he has done as bad a job as every democrat would like to make it out to be. What do you think a democrat President would've done when we were attacked on 9-11? Talk about some tough decisions! Kerry at the helm would have been a disaster. I think the Republican party has been enormously re-energized with the selection of Sarah ''Barracuda'' Palin.....Something O'bammy wanted to do but absolutely couldn't evidently. Instead he picked an old fossil ****, some 36 years in politics, great move for the Republicans. I bet he wishes he could turn back time. Go McCain/Palin '08!!!!!

USA Pit Bull, I too am an Ohioan. And I cannot bring myself to admitting that it was ONLY Palin's job to excite the Repubs. Also, neither speech had substance. It was all, "I will change this", and "I will veto that". Where was the policy? Where was the rest of the argument. And killroy6...are you clairvoyant? Can you say FOR CERTAIN that Kerry would have been horrible? I think that's a resounding no. And the re-energization worked for Dems, too. We're more than ready for Republicans to get out of the office and are ready for REAL change. And I mean change other than forgetting the positions one specific candidate said the first time he went for the nomination.

Katelyn, while it wasn't the best speech ever, it did what it needed to do. And I heard specific policy regarding taxation; education reform; Iraq; terrorism in general; Russia/Georgia; and offshore drilling---to name a few things. Besides, McCain has a 10-point bounce in polls this week from last, whereas Obama's speech gave him virtually no bounce. So something worked.

To USA Pit Bull: no I am not clairvoyant but perhaps the America Public is as a whole as they did not vote for Kerry, the blow hard. The resounding NO KERRY was heard throughout the United States. No need to be clairvoyant. The American people spoke, just like they will now and vote the most qualified of the candidates into office. Change! HA........if O'bammy ever became President it would definitely be CHANGE for the worse.....and perhaps I can see into the future somewhat and that's what scares the heck out me if the Dems get into office. It's what wrong with America today! Liberal views skewing the natural ways of society. Go McCain/Palin in '08!
