In the final debate, of course, we were introduced to a highly successful plumber named Joe, who had expressed his worries to Obama over taxation of the business he wished to buy.
The truth of the matter is:
1) The business Joe wants to buy clears 100k per year and would not be subject to further taxation - in fact, it would receive tax relief under Obama.
2) If it DID exceed 250k, it would still be exempt from further taxation as a "small business".
3) Joe (not a licensed plumber) cleared 40k last year, and is likely to repeat this year, and would actually benefit MORE from Obama's plan than McCain's.
So, really, the Joe we heard about, the one who stands for the merit of McCain's plan, the centerpiece of McCain's objection to Obama's proposals, is actually a fictional character.
But Joe IS a symbol. He's a symbol of the ideology that leads people to vote against their interest. Obama wants to help the REAL Joe so that he may someday be able to afford that business and earn surplus income that will allow him to invest and earn even more.
