The Republican icon shouldn't be Reagan.

A lot of Liberals despise Reagan, and I think the Republican icon should be someone like Dwight Eisenhower, or Robert Taft, or Barry Goldwater. Reagan's partisanship and lack of compassion for the poor causes disdain from Liberals- they now feel that Republicans don't care about the poor and are shallow. Reagan also had a liberal past- and was on the liberal side when he was governor of California. The Republicans need a new icon.

I am a liberal ani belive it should be president roosevelt because i though he did a great job with world II.he also had polo which he had to be in a wheelchair but at the national demcarte convartion he did not people to see him in his wheelchair so he used a cane but it was way to tough for him. he also help restore the country after the stockmarket crashed.

Well, he seems like an amazing candidate for the DEMOCRAT icon, but since FDR is a Democrat, he shouldn't be the Republican icon, because they don't belong to the same party. It doesn't say much if the icon of your party is from a different party. I'm saying the Republicans should look better to the Liberals and choose a different icon within their party.

Robert Goldwater? Goldwater never won the election. He's shouldn't be a Republican icon any more than John Kerry should be a democratic icon. Eisenhower was humiliated after the Russians revealed his lies regarding the spy plane, and do you honesty think anyone cares about Robert Taft? If you want an icon from that long ago you might as well go with the original Republican, Abraham Lincoln. Ronald Reagan presided over the fall of the Soviet Union and the Cold War, a struggle that had been raging for nearly half a century. Granted, he was by no means the only reason it collapsed, but The Berlin Wall moment is priceless. Under Carter the American economy was a disgrace. Under Reagan America became one of the more prosperous countries in human history. Whether these things were caused by Reagan is irrelevant when it comes to his image and representing the goals of the Republican party. He was about as popular as a modern president can get, winning virtually every state in America during he reelection. He created the Republican party as we know it today. He is definitely a good icon and certainly much better than the names you threw out there.

You can criticize Reagan, but Roosevelt wasn't perfect either. I have two words for you. Japanese Detainment.

Reagan was good on the economy, but there was a recession in '84 or '86 (I forgot what year), and his economic improvements didn't really benefit the poor directly. He was also very partisan, and Goldwater did win the nomination. Why does one have to be president to be an icon? And I don't like FDR at all, not only did he support the Internment camps, but he turned back boatloads of Jews from the concentration camps, and had the nerve to run for a fourth term when he KNEW he was in bad health.

I'll give you the vote Ike, simply because the argument as I understand is: A: The Republican icon shouldn't be Reagan. vs. N: It should be FDR(?).

But FDR is a Democrat.

Ike, you have my vote. Because the argument is about Reagan not being the Republican icon. You have stated your points and your opponent has not .....well not even a clue as to what your talking about.

Ditto Eaglevision. Quite frankly, unless noter dame can prove that FDR is a strong and successful conservative leader (LOL?), he's lost this from the first comment.

Lol, thank you, Eaglevision. I think he kind of missed the point.
