This is a sleeper subject, yet a viable one! If the computers experience an internet catastrophy, will it essentially disable us in a big way. I say, yes! We are way too dependent on machines, especially so called 'state of the art technology'. Could we even fathom going back to manual means to do things? Everything is too relative to computers, telecommunications and the like, with nothing to back any of that up. If so, are we perhaps headed for an unforeseen crash. (And since Al Gore claims to have invented the 'internet', could we hold him accountable?). Kidding about Senor Gore, but seriously...

Yes, I agree that we are way to dependent on machines, and if an interenet catastrophy were to occur it would be devastating. However, I think that it would not be as devastating as you would predict and it would most likely not be for very long. For thousands of years people have survived without machines and the interenet. Could today's people do it? Yes, but there will definetely be a lot of whining.

I thank you for the retort. Begging to differ, I just know that the nerve center of everything we do now is so centered on the microchip, and without it, the system goes awry. You are right, people could adapt, given the right circumstances and mentality for the same. However, you do realize that if it was a total crash, and I am emphasizing the extreme, there would be real serious problems. Stores and services would cease (I worked in data entry in a security alarm company and anytime our computers broke down, we were sent home! There was absolutely nothing we could do manually). As with the gloom vision of Y2K, it could not come at a worse time, either! Stores, warehouses and services might be shut down. Shipping would suffer, causing shortages in almost all items. Emergency services would have to make do. And panic! The lack of rational thought normally leads to fear, then to rash responses. Our monetary system is vunerable for over 90% of our money is dgitalized, the rest is in the form of actual hard cash. So, if the money falls, all else does too. With as many guns and nuts with them in this country, a total cyber failure is a potential nail in the coffin!

Yes, I agree that it would certainly be total chaos and panic. But not for as long as you would say, I say about maybe 4 months and MOSTLY everyone would adapt. There would most certainly be the whiners and there would be riots, death, and complete chaos in 1st world countries. Basically we will be facing global anarchy. But in my opinion, just get ready for it. It is bound to happen sooner or later and all we can really do is prepare. Start learning how to survive in the wild. Thats a start.
while we are at it... what if we are invaded by aliens? what if we all suddenly die? what if all our limbs start falling off randomly? what if a meteor comes and smackes us all dead and blasts the Earth into pieces? what if a nuclear was begins? what if we all forget everything we have ever learned? what if we are all being controlled by some computer? what if there is a god and He/She is watching you? what if someone smites you? what IF??????

Report Offensive CommentI agree with Nate. That's why I teach my kids to hunt, fish and survive. What if something catastrophic happens? Hell, what if they just get stranded somewhere? Basic survival skills should be taught in school. Teach marksmanship, how to start a fire (without matches), wild edibles, etc. Not only is it educational, it is a load of fun.

Report Offensive CommentYour money in cyber limbo. No food coming from anywhere. A lot of other negatives factors. Are you sure it is so far fetched? We have terrorists working with some brainy people to figure out what they can meddle in next. Why couldn't it happen? Imagine if you had a weapon that would obliterate your enemy without any consequence to your own side. Wouldn't one use it and in a big way? Crazy! Not a very uplifting prospect, but so possible. Hope it never happens, but who knows!

Report Offensive CommentYeah its possible and will likely happen, but thats why you might as well prepare for it. Heck, the world would not come to a stand still just because everybody couldn't communicate with everyone else. The world has only had the interenet for about 40 yrs. I think we could live without. :)
