Prostitution should be legalized. The Pros outweigh the cons.
Austhus said 02/29, 08:54 AM
What pros? I see pimps exploiting women on the street, being abused by both customers and employers alike. I see a faster spread of STIs due to minimal protection by these men and women, alike. Most importantly, I see dangerous arrangements when two people are together alone; easy enough for any murderer looking for an easy victim.
No, I dismiss your argument immediately. I don't see any positives from legalizing it. I am a liberal guy, anyone can see that. But I do NOT support this sort of occupational victimization. I want these women to get help, not legally allow them to risk their lives each night so they can buy another box of Ramen.

First of all, I do not agree with you on the dangers of being murdered. For example, take Amsterdam, where prostitution isn't illegal. Prostitutes operate from safe and secure facilities in the city. They don't have to stand in dark and abandoned alleyways and get into some stranger's car. That's where the real danger of getting harmed lies! Secondly, pimps exploiting women on the streets is far more likely to occur when prostition is illegal since nobody looks out for these women. In the Netherlands, prostitutes can form labor unions, they get health insurance, they are protected by the law and they will use that protection as soon as they are abused. Also, I don't agree with your argument on STIs. When prostitution is illegal, people looking for a prostitute often have few options and have to choose a woman that has no other choice (for example, because she is a junkie thus using needles that spread disease) and needs the cash. Do you really believe legalizing it will increase the risk of STIs? I think you'll see the opposite happening. Furthermore, legalizing it will make it more controlable for the government which will protect prostitutes better against criminal organizations
Good debate, but I think prostitution will exist whether legalized or or not. The question becomes, which avenue is the safest?

Report Offensive CommentAusthus - those consequences don't automatically flow from legalization; in fact they flow from the criminality of prostitution. If women didn't have to fear going to the police due to their choice of employment, they wouldn't need pimps. Your 'most important' argument about making murder easy just doesn't hold water - that's a complete non sequitur.

Report Offensive CommentUnrelated: B-man, we took the Cuba debate on before - it was staggeringly in favor of lifting the embargo (maybe that's why no one is taking) http://www.elephant-donkey.com/elephantdonkey/show/1421 . There really should be an engine that searches past debates automatically based on your title, and asks, "Is your debate similar to any of these?" and based on the info, you might just come across a past debate that addresses the topic as thoroughly as you'd want. btw, interesting debate; I look forward to seeing it play out.

Report Offensive CommentJust a bit of advise. If you're ever in Tijuana, don't walk around town. Take a taxi everywhere. The cops are so corrupt. They prefer to mess with the college kids as opposed to the Marines.
