Eh, it's mainly historical. The straw polls have nothing on them. CA and NY represent American diversity.

NY and CA probably are more representative of the broader American community. However, I think there is value in this so called "historical" thing. Traditions in politics are probably the last thing we have left giving today's political gladiator-like arena some sense of order and civility. I think it also gives the candidates a chance to get their sea legs going before they're thrown into the thicker fray of large states like NY and CA.
