To many observers, the timing couldn't have been worse, with the remarks seeming to insult the very crowd Obama has been courting in Pennsylvania ahead of its key primary next Tuesday.

I was born, raised, and continue to live in a small, Midwestern town ??? the sort of small town Obama describes. My town is surrounded by other small towns ??? I go to one town for the mall, another for the theater, et cetera. I'd say I have a great deal of experience on the subject of small, Midwestern towns and the inhabitants thereof.
Generally speaking (as Obama was), they are ??? we are ??? exactly as described. The local economy has been on life support for years, we've been neglected by both the state and federal governments, and people are bitter about it. We are bitter...Obama was only the first to acknowledge it.
Will it hurt his chances in Pa. Maybe. But Obama hit the nail on the head, and while some people may not like a politician saying exactly what he means, I think many will appreciate the candidness.
Obama is "elitist" only because Hillary Clinton and John McCain said so. This is a political fight, and poor Hillary will do anything to sully Obama -- all the moreso if the Republicans aid the cause (Mc Cain needs to make sure the Dems stay in a snit of sniping). I think you will find that Obamas remarks, in context, are absolutely true and will be supported as such in the region of which he speaks. A pity that a minority of the rural, disenfranchised electorate, will likely see this as elitist if for no other reason than half of them likely could not understand the message and thought they were being called names. As with any sensitive group, you can only call them certain things if you are one of them. Otherwise their ire will be far out of proportion to their numbers -- and the alleged missive.

Report Offensive CommentIf you're under the impression I simply cut and pasted text because of the missing symbols (the triplicate question marks), I understand. I assure you though, that isn't the case. The missing symbols are em dashes. I just assumed they were available here, as they are most everywhere else. If there was some way to go back and edit, I'd change them all to hyphens (and change the period after "Pa" into a question mark).

Report Offensive CommentI thought this entire thing was right on the money! You know what Obama said wrong? Bitter. Instead, he should have used the word "frustrated" and then no one would be up in arms. He's RIGHT. Working Class (and working poor) white america are indeed frustrated and bitter that they've been ignored for the last 2 presidencies. I live in Harrisburg and when I visit Steelton to see some of my friends, I drive by the Steel Mill that goes on for miles and miles and miles, and a very small fraction of the place is used. I'm not even sure for what anymore. Steelton used to be one of the biggest flourishing towns in the state. Everyone there worked at the mill and it aided in our economy. Once the U.S. started buying steel from other countries, thousands upon thousands of people lost jobs and that busy little town went to hell. Since then it hasn't gone up in anything except the crime rates. What's so sad? This happened all over the state and with other things, like farming. The number of domestic farmers in PA is not nearly as high as it used to be. This dependence on foreign trade is wrecking the lives of countless people and we're seeing it now with so many jobs going overseas. Every call center for a major company is outsourced to India because of cheaper labor! Ofcourse the people who are losing their jobs. The people who need them the most are bitter. Bitter as ****, and at least he has the balls to say it.

Report Offensive CommentLet's not pick only on Obama as being an "elitist". All 3 candidates are part of elite, that part of any society that is restrictive in accepting others among themselves. Those others are what they over, and over say ... "You people", we fight for .. "You people". In a nut shell their "other" are the ORDINARY PEOLPLE. We the ORDINARY PEOPLE keep that elite alive and well. They do not realize that without the "other " [ORDINARY PEOPLE ] they will be worse than us. So, what's wrong with Obama? 1. He is aspiring to becoming an established elitist and tries to get passing marks from the his beloved masters from/of "established elite". Trying to show what he is NOT he makes the big mistake of PRETENDING. 2. It seems that Obama still does not understand the "elitist" nuances between CONDESCEND vs. CONDESCENDING. Mr. Obama!, the verb CONDESCEND means to waive the privilege of rank whereas the adjective CONDESCENDING is the quality of of a person of PATRONIZING equivalent to being ARROGANT and believing that he is one of the "ne plus ultra" or I am the only one !!! 3. Mr. Obama you get everything upside-down. Rather to get a "good mark" you are in trouble. Not a good student!?! 4. Being at the beginning of your campaign of becoming an "established elite" it will be the high time to understand that we the ORDINARY people know also of another ELITE, that is related to the WORK of typing, a typewriter type, SMALLER than a PICA, equivalent to ONLY 10-points, and exactly 12 ELITE/inch. Sure you don't know of its existence ( WORK as well as the elite type) so use care when selecting the ELITE you are after. 5. Maybe the gaffe will give the necessary time ( 8 years ) of reflecting that we the ORDINARY people know that a gaffe fixed is worse than an "ORDINARRY" gaffe. 6. Any beginning has an ending. This gaffe is the beginning of the end!

It appears you've done this over and over again -- anyone who checks your history here isn't going to take you seriously. But hey, enjoy your spot on the leaderboard.
