There were no WMDs in Iraq which was the basis of us going there, we thought there were, or George Bush did. Al Qaeda formed there since the war, and inordinate amount of deaths occured. We should have never went to war there.

Although i am personally against the Iraq War, i do believe it was necessary to go in initially, therefore not rendering the whole war a waste. First of all, President Bush could hardly have not gone to war. 1. he has the Bush family impulse to wage war in the middle east and 2. all of America was holwing for revenge after 9/11. Secondly, the situation in the Middle East needed addressing. Terrorist groups controlled the politics, dictators ruled, and the people lived in a general fear of being ripped out of their homes at night and sent to some Iranian Al Queda training camp. Although the war was handled poorly (it should have been handled like the Persian Gulf War, when we went in quick and strong, dominated, and left strong), it was necessary to go in.

"2. all of America was holwing for revenge after 9/11. Secondly, the situation in the Middle East needed addressing."
That is what you said. Were we howling for revenge against Iraq? No, thats why we sent troops to Afghanistan. In fact, Saddam never even did anything to us and he had no WMD and there was no Al Qaeda back then. We had no basis to go to the war, except the theory of there being WMDs. If everyone went to war based on theories, then the world would be in choas.

It still can not be ignored that a cruel dictator was in in control of Iraq, and was mostly likely funding terrorist organizatations. Perhaps we should have had the Afghani war, left, than had the Iraq war later
theyoungdem said 04/20, 08:45 PM
Most likely? You can't go to war based on theories. You need to have factual evidence. We should not leave the Afghani war until we catch the real culprit, Osama Bin Laden. Iraq had nothing to do with any terrorist attacks in American soil.

Report Offensive CommentI think that the Iraq war was good from the start and is still a cause worth fighting for. If the terrorists weren't busy fighting our troops who are trained for combat in Iraq then they would be killing our people in the U.S.

Report Offensive CommentPopulist, your arguments and references to Saddam funding terror groups and "Iranian Al Qaeda Camps" are lacking in any sort of knowledge about the reality of terrorism and Middle Eastern Politics. 1) Wahabbist al Qaeda Sunnis, who are mostly out of Saudi Arabia, hate Shi'a Iran as much as the United States because they see them as Islamic heretics. Iran didn't object and even assisted the US invasion of Afghanistan because the Taliban and al Qaeda presence there was a direct threat to Iran as well. 2) Terror groups do NOT control politics in the Middle East and your belief that it does shows your lack of knowledge beyond a casual understanding. Egypt = Secular dictatorship supported by the US; Syria = Secular Socialist Dictatorship; Saudi Arabia = Fundamentalist Wahhabi Monarchy supported by the US; Kuwait = Conservative Monarchy supported by US; UAE, Bahrain, Qatar = Parliamentary Monarchies supported by the US. Iran = Parliamentary Theocracy. Iraq USED to be a secular socialist dictatorship. Any terror groups running these governments? No. Possible connections? Sure. But hey, the US funds the Jundullah based out of Pakistan that set off bombs in Iran, and does so semi-publicly, even hosting a couple of its leaders in Baghdad for a strategy meeting. Ironically, after the last meeting a couple bombs went out of a town in Iran and killed 11 people. All states fund terror groups that fight states they don't like because it's a great way to create instability w/o having to actually risk much other than a few bucks and some bad press. If you find my statement impossible to believe, do some research on the Contras in Nicaragua, the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan and even the entire South Vietnamese government. Also, do some research on old CIA missions that involved poisoning water supplies in China, putting concrete into school milk supplies in Cuba so kids would develop blocked colons and die. and FINALLY, the war was not necessary. America saying, "we're sad and pissed off" is not a legitimate reason to go to war, esp just to target a Muslim country... that is incredibly irresponsible. That's the whole reason the UN and all these other international institutions were created by the US and other countries, to protect national sovereignty. I mean Saddam is by no means an awesome dude or anything, but look at Darfur, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo... these are all countries that live under terrible conditions with terrible leaders (3 million people have died in the DRC in the last 15 years)... but we're not getting involved there. The Iraq war was not at all strategic, unnecessary and proved to extremists that America's goal is the destruction of Muslim countries. Wow, I started rambling at the end and I apologize, I'm watching a stream from the Pennsylvania primaries.

Here again we have someone mistakenly connecting Iraq to 9/11. There were no followers of Bin Laden in Iraq before the US invaded and made the Iraq choose between and invading nation taking over, or allying themselves with a group that also thought the invading nation a mortal enemy. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
