The colonization of Africa was a complex and lengthy process that included much of the 16th to 20th centuries. Countries and cultures intermingled as the transplanted European perspectives and traditions, assimilated into African culture contributing to the makeup of modern day Africa. Colonies were temporarily modernized, with enhanced short-term economic prosperity. Despite these short-term advantages, however, the lasting negative repercussions of colonization are difficult to ignore. Previous reliance on their colonizer produced vulnerability in social, economic, and political venues for these now independent modern nations. These countries all experienced an accelerated pattern of development to an economic plateau that could not be sustained when the colonizer had withdrawn. Because of the indigenous culture being mostly dominated by the colonizers, there has an erosion in cultural and social values. In spite of the many positive short-term accomplishments in African colonies by European empires, in the long term, those rulers have undermined the natural evolution of development for the long term of a true state of independence, explaining the clear and present disarray.

I disagree. European colinization can only be seen as a success. Unfortunately, Africa's problems are more a result of modern factor. Dictators, warlords, ethnic cleansings, aids, the diamond trade, and lack of substantial relief programs to name a few. All of those are responsible, not long dead Europeans.
